Family members and central bank officials say they are not aware of any information that the central bank governor has been arrested, dispelling rumours that he was placed under house arrest.

Family members and central bank officials say they are not aware of any information that the central bank governor has been arrested, dispelling rumours that he was placed under house arrest.

The officials, however, admitted that the governor was supposed to appear before the parliament today together with officials from the ministry of finance.

Bank Governor Cornelio Koryom and minister of finance David Deng Athorbei were summoned by the parliament to provide a briefing on general economic situation and what the bank and the ministry of finance were doing to address the current deteriorating economic situation in the country.

Koryom failed to appear before the house and the finance minister could not attend in person because he is out the country on a foreign trip. None of his deputies or senior official at the ministry of finance was able to attend on his behalf, forcing members of parliament to cancel the session organised for Wednesday.

A son of Koryom when reached for comment said, “I am fine. I am not complaining. My father too is fine. I left the house this morning when he was still around at 9:00 am. He was due to go to the parliament for a briefing.”
