South Sudan ruling party MP says no money for peace dissemination

Thomas Wani Kundu, the head of information and communications committee in South Sudan’s National Legislative Assembly said awareness campaigns about the signed compromise peace agreement are on hold owing to lack of money.

Thomas Wani Kundu, the head of information and communications committee in South Sudan’s National Legislative Assembly said awareness campaigns about the signed compromise peace agreement are on hold owing to lack of money.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Kundu said dissemination of peace messages was supposed to be carried out by members of the parliament in their constituencies across South Sudan.

He pointed out that plan was hindered by the lack of money from the National Ministry of Finance. He explained that about 35 million South Sudanese pounds was approved for the sensitization about the peace agreement in South Sudan but the ministry did not release these funds.

“Money was approved for the awareness campaign for peace, but there is no money,” he said. “We previously passed the budget, but the money approved was not enough, we have not yet received the money because there is no money,” he added.

Yesterday the government, SPLM-IO and SPLM-G10 signed a follow-up agreement committing to carry out “mobilization and sensitization of the public through dissemination of the Agreement.”

“The activities to be conducted shall include travel, arrival, and maintenance of advance teams in Juba and the states, meetings, workshops, mobility, communication etc.,” says the document signed yesterday by negotiators in Addis Ababa.
