South Sudan 'regrets' Kenyan decision to withdraw from peace process

South Sudanese government says it "regrets" the decision by Kenya to disengage from the peace process in South Sudan and withdraw its peacekeeping troops from the UN mission in South Sudan.

Ateny Wek Ateny, South Sudan’s presidential spokesman, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that South Sudan regrets misunderstandings between the United Nations and Kenya over the dismissal of General Johnson Mogoa Kimani Ondieki as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Ateny pointed out that Kenya is an important country in the region, while citing its leading role in bringing about peace in South Sudan.

"We regret the position and misunderstandings between the United Nations and Kenya, because Kenya is a very important country in the region, it was part of the countries that brokered the peace agreement “said Ateny.

The presidential spokesman urged the United Nations and the Kenyan government to solve the problem so Kenya reverses its decision to withdraw from the peace process in South Sudan.
