South Sudan rebels attacked by tribal militia in Darfur

Gunmen in East Darfur have attacked a camp of South Sudanese said to be loyal to Riek Machar, leader of the SPLM-IO faction.

Local resident Ali Hamdan Al Doud told Radio Tamazuj that men from one of the tribes attacked the camp of the Riek Machar forces on Friday evening in Bagaya area of Bahr al Arab Locality in East Darfur State.

The source said that the SPLM-IO troops have been in the area since August.

East Darfur’s Rizeigat Arab tribe currently enjoys good relations with the Dinka Malual of neighboring Northern Bahr al Ghazal State. The Rizeigat migrate seasonally southward into the state.

Radio Tamazuj is yet to confirm from multiple sources the number of casualties. Preliminary information suggests about two dozen wounded and several dead.
