South Sudanese rebels attacked Aweil Center County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state on Tuesday night according to reports from the area. The rebel forces entered the county headquarters at 2:00 a.m. and evacuated at 4:00 a.m.
The rebel forces have been accused of looting from the market and food and medicines stores.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj this morning by phone, County Commissioner William Ajonga Deng said the current security situation in the county is very dangerous. He said the rebels opened fire on his house and managed to get inside, without confirming whether anyone died.
“They entered into my house and they even opened fire on my house,” he said.
Rebel forces last July moved through Aweil Center County on their way from Western Bahr al Ghazal to Darfur, but this may be the first time they have returned to the county in force.
The forces fall under the command of General Dau Aturjong Nyuol who contested against the former Governor Paul Malong Awan in the 2010 elections.
William Ajonga says that the rebel forces that attacked the county headquarters had been on the move for four days before the attack Tuesday night.
