South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has removed the Twic state governor, Kon Manyiel Kuol.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has removed the Twic state governor, Kon Manyiel Kuol.

Manyiel, appointed into the position in January 2017, was succeeded by his deputy Daniel Awet Aken. Mr. Awet will serve as the acting governor.

Thursday’s order, which became public on Friday, gave no reasons for the South Sudanese leader’s move.

Local officials have attributed the governor’s sacking to a dispute over where the state headquarters should be placed.

For his part, Kon Manyiel thanked President Kiir for the trust he bestowed upon him during his time in office, pledging to cooperate with his successor.
