South Sudan police said elaborate plans to ensure the safety and security of the public during Christmas and New Year celebrations have been rolled out.

South Sudan police said elaborate plans to ensure the safety and security of the public during Christmas and New Year celebrations have been rolled out.

During the Christmas and New Year period there is usually an increase in social, cultural and economic activities resulting in an increase in criminal activities.

Police Spokesman Daniel Justin told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the main objectives and intentions of the plan are to minimize the activities of criminal elements and to provide a safe and secure environment for citizens, visitors and shoppers.

He disclosed that the plan will include continuous patrols in neighbourhoods in Juba, public venues and markets.

Daniel did not say how many forces will be deployed in the capital Juba.

“The security plan has already been submitted to the minister of interior. Our forces will be deployed to markets and neighbourhoods,” he said.

The police spokesman urged residents of Juba to protect themselves during Christmas and New Year celebrations, saying crimes like theft and burglary spike as Christmas approaches.

“People should be careful because criminal groups such as Toronto Boys will start snatching handbags and other things,” he said.

Daniel pointed out that the overall security situation in South Sudan is stable, appealing to the population to cooperate with the police by reporting suspicious or criminal activities.

“I call upon our citizens to report any criminal activities during this festive period because we are there to protect them,” he said.
