South Sudan parliament speaker cautions members on absenteeism

South Sudan's National Parliament Speaker has Tuesday cautioned the members for failing to attend sittings regularly.

The Speaker of the National Parliament Manasseh Magok Rundial urged members to come to the House regularly to avoid creating problems, threatening to change the system of taking attendance.

He said that members sign for attendance and then disappear, warning that attendance would have to be taken twice both inside the parliament hall and in the lobby as a consequence.

“We should be serious with the attendance otherwise people can be counted inside. Even physically those who are present should be physically counted. People are questioning, we are questioned,” Rundail said.

On Monday, the parliament announced that Mathew Mathiang Deng, Martha Martin and Henry Hillar Duwar lost their constitutional rights as members of the house for being absent for the last 12 sittings.

The parliament said these members may come to the house through agreement when the government of national unity is formed.
