S Sudan parliament sends condolences over death of prominent Sudanese feminist

South Sudan’s parliament has expressed its condolences over the passing of feminist leader and member of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim in a letter addressed to the people of Sudan today.

South Sudan’s parliament has expressed its condolences over the passing of feminist leader and member of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim in a letter addressed to the people of Sudan today.

Fatima, who was among the first generation of women politicians in Sudan, died at the age of 84 in London on Saturday.

The South Sudanese parliament said it is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim. Speaker Anthoni Lino Makan said Fatima was one of the greatest ladies in Sudan.

Late Fatima was born in Khartoum in 1933 and became the first woman to be a Member of Parliament in the Middle East in 1965.

In 2006, Ibrahim won the Ibn Rushd Prize in recognition of her struggle for promoting women’s rights and social justice in Sudan and the Arab region.
