South Sudan opposition leader calls for inclusive national dialogue

Lam Akol, one of the leading South Sudanese opposition leaders has called for an inclusive national dialogue in the country if the war was to be stopped

Akol, a former agriculture minister in unity government resigned in July and formed a new movement with an aim to remove president Kiir from power, asserting that the president has shut off all the venues and chose war instead of dialogue. In a statement he issued a chairman of the national Democratic Movement, urged the international community to work with the people of South Sudan and put pressure on the government under President Salva Kiir to stop war and embark on a new inclusive political process outside South Sudan

The dialogue, he said will provide a forum for all to thrash out the root causes of the conflict and agree on the future of the country. He emphasized inclusivity would not be about individuals, though the role of individuals also matters.

“This package offers a better chance for a genuine peace to be attained in South Sudan. Peace that will pave the way for reconciliation and healing and provide a conducive atmosphere for enacting a permanent constitution for the country”, Akol wrote in a statement
