Meetings of South Sudan’s opposition groups that were concluded in Nairobi recently agreed on the deployment of regional forces to provide security in the country, an influential opposition leader said.
Lam Akol, a prominent opposition leader who resigned from Kiir’s government earlier this month had invited all opposition factions to attend a three-day meeting to discuss the ongoing political developments in South Sudan.
Lam Akol told Radio Tamazuj that the deployment of regional forces will create a political ground that will pave the way for reaching a new political deal.
“The meetings agreed that the situation is very critical and the country is on the verge of collapse as a result of the totalitarian and tribal regime in Juba”said Akol
“So the only way for a peaceful settlement is the deployment of regional troops in Juba to provide security and to create a political ground so that a new political deal is reached” said Akol.
The opposition leader pointed out that they also resolved to call for a broader meeting to form a collation against the current government in Juba. Akol underscored that the opposition group will form a political and military coalition to restore peace in South Sudan if the international community fails to deploy regional troops.
