South Sudan government denies resignation of vice-president

South Sudan’s government denied on Friday that vice president James Wani Igga had submitted a resignation to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

South Sudan’s government denied on Friday that vice president James Wani Igga had submitted a resignation to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

"It is not true that the vice president has resigned. These are rumours meant to cause instability and divisions in the country. This is the part of the propaganda to divide people,’’ vice president’s spokesman, Kalisto Ladu told Radio Tamazuj on Friday.

Ladu said there was no any resignation from the vice president, pointing out that James Wani Igga was carrying out his responsibility fully.

The country’s vice president is currently in Bahr al Ghazal region for peace mobilization.

“The vice president and President Kiir are working closely to bring peace and stability in South Sudan.

“They have good working relationship and they recently held meetings in Juba on how to bring peace, so Vice President Igga has never considered resigning from the government,” Kalisto said.

There had been reports that Wani had submitted a resignation letter to Kiir which the president is said to have rejected.

South Sudan has been in a crisis since President Kiir fell out with his former deputy Riek Machar in December 2013.

It remains unclear as to what could have triggered speculation about the resignation of the vice president which began to dominate social media platforms since last week.
