Local authorities in Manyo County in northern Upper Nile State say Kaka Payam was retaken by government forces on 24 January, just before the truce between the government and the rebels came into effect.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the Manyo County Commissioner Al Tayib Ajak said the security situation returned to normal in Kaka after its recapture by the government.

“Kaka area was retaken from the rebels since 24 January,” he stated, adding that thousands of people have been driven by the conflict in Kaka area and its surroundings and sought refuge in South Kordofan and White Nile states.

Ajak called on the local citizens to immediately return back to their homes after the government chased the mutineers away. He also appealed to humanitarian organizations to support the returnees.

Earlier this month, about 260 SPLA soldiers in Kaka Payam abruptly shifted their loyalty to Riek Machar and took control over the Kaka town area, while loyal troops maintained their positions in the northern part of the area.
