South Sudanese government accused the rebels of attacking a convoy of government troops at Omboro area Lol state as peace negotiations were ongoing in Addis Ababa on Thursday.

Government spokesman in Lol Omar Isahag told Radio Tamazuj that rebel troops attacked their convoy at Omboro area on Thursday morning, but they were repulsed.

He claimed that they killed several rebel soldiers during clashes.

For his part, rebel deputy spokesman Paul Lam Gabriel said he did not receive any report on fighting with government forces in Lol state.

On Thursday evening, South Sudan’s government and opposition groups signed a cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians and humanitarian access agreement in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, ending the first phase of the revitalization process that was launched on 18 December.

According to the agreement, the cessation of hostilities agreement will come into force at 00:01 on December 24.
