Kenya’s government said it agreed to allocate land for South Sudan’s dry port at the Inland Container Depot in Naivasha.
“The Kenya government has responded to the request of South Sudan to set aside 10 acres of land at the Inland Container Depot in Naivasha industrial park, for use as a dry port by the government of South Sudan,” said Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta.
President Uhuru made the remarks on Monday in Nairobi, after bilateral talks with South Sudan President Salva Kiir.
The Kenyan leader revealed that his government is fast tracking the completion of the LAPSSET projects, including transnational highways, oil pipeline and the Lamu Port, among others, to link the two countries.
“The first berth (of the Lamu Port) will be ready this August while Berths 2 and 3 are expected to be completed within the year 2020,” said President Kenyatta.
He announced that Kenya will hold a trade fair in South Sudan in November this year, as part of efforts aimed at restoring confidence that Africa’s youngest nation is open for business.
“The Expo will not only showcase Kenyan products but also reciprocate by exposing South Sudan’s products to Kenyan business people,” said President Uhuru.
On his part, South Sudan President Salva Kiir said that the two countries agreed on a framework for engagement on border issues, noting that technical teams will soon meet to resolve border-related issues.
The South Sudanese leader pointed out that they also discussed security challenges facing the region.
Kiir visited Kenya in response to the invitation extended to him by his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kenya is among the guarantors of South Sudan peace deal signed in September 2018.
