The Inspector General of the South Sudan National Police Service, Gen Abraham Manyuat, on Sunday evening lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew.
The curfew, declared on January 17, followed a night protest and looting of shops owned by Sudanese in Juba and other major towns that was sparked by the brutal killing of South Sudanese in Sudan’s Gezira State, following its takeover by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Manyuat told the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) that the security situation in the whole country was back to normal, hence the lifting of the curfew.
“I want to give a public announcement as the Ministry of Interior regarding the curfew. Effective today, there is no more curfew. Everyone should return to their normal routine and everyone is free to move normally. We are okay,” he said.
Police said 16 people were killed across South Sudan during the riots.
