South Sudan denies receiving weapons from Egypt

South Sudan’s government has denied the Sudanese President’s allegations that Egyptian government provided arms and ammunition to South Sudan’s army.

On Tuesday, Sudan President Omar Al Bashir accused Egypt of providing South Sudan with weapons and ammunition.

Speaking at a press conference in Juba on Friday, Mawien Makol, Spokesman of South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the ministry was dismayed by remarks attributed to President Bashir.

“The Republic of South Sudan is disturbed by this unfortunate, unfound and baseless statement,” said Makol.

Makol stressed that South Sudan upholds its commitment to regional peace initiatives and maintains the highest level of bilateral relations with Sudan based on the spirit of the Joint Cooperation Agreement signed between the two countries in 2012.

“The ministry, therefore, calls on the leadership of the sisterly country, Sudan, not to forget its responsibility to work with South Sudan in the spirit of the cooperation agreement and to address any issues that may arise between the two neighboring countries through dialogue and direct communication at leadership level and diplomatic channels,” he said.
