The South Sudan National Olympics Committee on Thursday held a carnival in Juba to mark the beginning of the countdown to the 2024 games in Paris next month.
The President of the South Sudan National Olympics Committee, Juma Stephen, said the country would send competitive teams in different sports to France. He disclosed the games as including tae-kwon-do, athletics and basketball.
Juma stressed that South Sudan possesses talent capable of making a difference in sports, and expressed his gratitude to all the federations preparing to participate in the Paris Olympics.
He said the final national team to Paris would be unveiled once the basketball federation finished their selection. The basketball squad will comprise 12 players selected from the current 50.
Youth and Sports minister Joseph Gieng Akec reaffirmed the support to the various national teams to the Olympics. He commended the basketball team for their qualification after three years of hard work.
The minister encouraged those who will be participating in the Olympics to maintain the good image of South Sudan, and to “build friendship and extend our culture to the rest of the World”.
