South Sudan government has banned wood and charcoal exportation due to its destructive effect on the environment.

This move is part of efforts by the country’s government to preserve the environment.

Speaking to reporters in Juba today, Minister of Trade and Investment Musa Hassan Tiel said government banned with immediate effect illegal logging.

“A lot of people are engaged illegally in cutting of trees for the purposes of producing charcoal for export,” Hassan said.

The minister directed all environment agencies and the relevant departments to ensure the ban is enforced.

Mr. Hassan further said the ban was necessitated by destruction of forests in the country. “We urge our citizens and those who are engaged in those kinds of activities to stop doing that,” he said.

“Our citizens should look for new ways of cooking our food,” he added.
