A military general Court-Martial in South Sudan has sentenced a soldier to death for Murder, sparking questions behind the motives when several high rank officials and military officers have never been held to account for crimes they have committed.
The spokesman of the army, Brigadier General Lul Ruai Koang announced on Friday that a General Court-Martial of the army has sentenced a soldier to death for murder of three people. The 26 years old identified as Ngong Thuch, will be executed by a firing squad once the president signs the death warrant. Thuch was among a group of 77 soldiers who were arrested and tried for various military crimes. Besides him, two others were sentenced to 14 years each for raping 14-year-old girls.
Other victims of the crimes were either demoted or sentenced to varying prison terms. They were convicted of looting, theft, selling their weapons and selling fuel meant for tanks during the conflict in July. Trials in other parts of the country continue.
