South Sudan ANC party criticizes govt for lawlessness

South Sudan African National Congress (ANC) party has on Tuesday in Juba criticized the government for not providing security to citizens in various parts of the country, referring to rampant lawlessness.

Wilson Lodiong Sebit, the vice president of the party said many innocent people are being killed and the killers are never brought to book but instead are described as 'unknown gunmen'. He pointed out that even when there are arrests, there is no public record of whether perpetrators are brought to court or not.

“Insecurity in the country particularly Juba and other towns in the country where killing of our innocent citizens, robbery of people’s properties by what is currently called 'unknown gunmen' or women is taking place. This sometimes happen during broad daylight in the middle of our security personnel in the cities.”

Sebit added, “Sometimes we hear of some arrest to these unknown gunmen but their being brought to books have not been made public. This has caused a very serious concern to the people of South Sudan. In case of arrest made, the culprits should be made public and their trials be exposed to the media.”

The party urged the authorities to immediately plan to stop inhumane acts in the country by strengthening the security sector in all areas.

On the economic situation in the country, the party said it is troubled by the impact of the devaluation of the South Sudanese pound.

“ANC is troubled with these sudden changes in the lives of South Sudanese people. Many families are not able to purchase the drinking water from the moving tankers in the town. ANC calls upon the ministry of finance and other related institutions to reduce taxes on essential commodities, establish cooperative societies, and create quarter councils to manage cooperatives societies,” the party vice president said

The party official also called on the government to revise the currency policies, recommending specifically that the government should only auction dollars to the commercial banks and close forexes.

The party deputy chairperson welcomed the appointment of the first vice president describing it as good start of the implementation of the peace agreement urging Riek to return to Juba to show his commitment.

ANC called on the parties to the peace agreement to expedite all the necessary steps for implementing security arrangements as stipulated in the agreement urging the regional and international community to support the implementation process.
