South Kordofan: water shortage in Babanusa

Citizens of Babanusa town in the western sector of South Kordofan complained from acute water shortages in the area and urged authorities in the region to resolve the issue by establishing more water sources and maintaining the existing ones.

The shortage is noteworthy because the town witnessed popular demonstrations last month against lack of basic services such as water systems, roads, electricity, and a hospital. The sit-in was only lifted because the government pledged to meet these demands in stages.

A number of citizens from the area told Radio Tamazuj that for the last three days all the northern part of the town are faced by a severe water shortage.

They revealed the increase in the water prices in the town as the price of one water barrel boosted up to 11 pounds,  attributing the reason to the breakdown of 3 hand-pumps which citizens of the northern part of the town were depending upon, leaving residents travelling for long distances in search of drinking water.

However, due to far distances water sellers were force to raise the tariff of the barrel to 11 pounds owing to the distances travelled.

Besides, they acknowledged that people in the area are depending on the hand-pumps due to absence of a water system administered by the town government.
