The Governor of Sudan’s South Kordofan State said his government has received nearly 62,000 South Sudanese refugees after fleeing due to hunger and violence in their country.

Governor Issa Adam Abakar, who was briefing members of the state parliament on Wednesday, said about 35,000 refugees are currently living in Al-Liri Locality and that about 27,000 others are sheltering in Abu Jubeiha Locality.

Abakar claimed that despite a strain on the local service provisions, his state is working to assist the South Sudanese refugees.

Residents of Abu Jubeiha Locality told Radio Tamazuj earlier that about 1,000 refugees arrived in Al- Sarajiya area, saying most of the refugees are women and children who fled due to the recent violence in Upper Nile.
