The humanitarian situation in Dalami County, which lies under the control of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) and hosts thousands of displaced people, worsened due to lack of food and medicine in the region, an official has said.

The Humanitarian Affairs Secretary of the SPLM-N told Radio Tamazuj that mortality statistics among children during the months of August and September reached fifteen deaths of children below five years due to malaria and diarrhea. He stated that the average weights of children in those ages lie between six and seven kilograms and that the number of deaths among the elderly has reached twenty.

The secretary also revealed that there were 28 miscarriages in May and June due to lack of medicine and medical care and added that medicines were almost non-existent, with the only two types of medications being Amoxicillin and Paracetemol.

In addition to that, the secretary asserted on the lack of food and medicine and that there were severe shortages of drinking water as there were only two water pumps to fulfill the needs of 56,000 displaced people and residents. He also stated that the agricultural situation is not better and that agriculture in Elabaid was relatively worse that in the areas of Tojour and Tangali while agriculture in the area of Jakama have completely burnt because the rain stopped in those areas. The secretary predicted that the humanitarian situation during the next two months is likely to get worse if humanitarian organizations do not respond urgently.
