Source claims rebels attack in Aweil Centre

Rebels loyal to Dr. Riak Machar launched an attack on one of the payam headquarters of Aweil Centre County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal yesterday.

According to the source, the attack was on Thursday, and preliminary information suggests the rebels looted some medicines but did not confirm any casualties.

Aweil Centre County Inspector of Planning and Budget Joseph Ugar confirmed the attack on one payam of the county.

Ugar told Radio Tamazuj that the rebels carried out assaults at Awada Payam of Aweil Centre and took some medicines from the payam clinic

He did not mention the number of cartons of medicines taken by the rebels, noting that more information would be available when the County Commissioner and head of Aweil Police return from inspecting the place of attack.

Ugar said the attackers came from the direction of Wau County and left after the raid.

For his part, SPLA spokesperson Philip Aguer denied, saying there is was no attack. He pointed out there was no defection of SPLA forces reported by the SPLA Division 5 Commander in Wau.

Aguer said the security was calm and everybody was celebrating peacefully for Independence Day.
