After a quarrel with his wife, a man committed suicide on the outskirts of Torit town of Eastern Equatoria State on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Sergeant Major German Gordon Valerio.

Khamis Patrick Forto, a family member, told Radio Tamazuj that Sergeant Major German escaped from home on Friday at around 3 pm and was later found hanging on a rope.

According to Khamis, the late soldier left behind a suicide note in which he expressed frustrations about frequent family quarrels.

“There was a fight between him and his wife at their home, so the son came to separate them from fighting and after his son saw that the fight was not helping, the son beat him to separate them. He had also injured his wife during the fight,” Khamis said.

“After the fight, he left the house at around 3 pm. He dressed in uniform since he is a soldier from the engineering corps, he went to the bush and hanged himself,” he added.

Meanwhile, Major General John Luny, Eastern Equatoria State Deputy Police Commissioner, confirmed the incident, saying the case is still in the hands of the family.

He, however, said investigations into the incident are ongoing while calling on the local communities to report such cases to the concerned authorities for action.

“Up to now we are investigating how this incident happened and where. For sure, this incident happened but still in the hands of the family. We are calling on them to come and report to us where the late was working and the place of the incident,” he said.
