Nearly 11 people have been bitten by snakes in Duk Pagak County of Jonglei this month, a marked increase in numbers from last month, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Duk Pagak County Commissioner James Yien Jal said there have been 11 snakebites recorded in the county so far.

He said at least six people were bitten by snakes last month, adding that the weather might cause that number to rise.

Yien pointed out that heavy floods in the area may be a factor.

The commissioner appealed to NGOs operating in the country to provide treatment for those injured.
