At least six people have been killed and 21 others injured following a clash between two clans in Duk County’s Duk Padiet Town in Jonglei State.
Duk County Commissioner John Chatim told Radio Tamazuj that the violence involved members of the Angaac and Riic clans and was triggered by a revenge killing.
According to Chatim, a man from the Angaac clan allegedly killed a member of the Riic clan, believing the victim was linked to the killing of one of his relatives some time ago.
The commissioner said the incident escalated into a wider confrontation, leaving three people dead from each side and 21 others injured.
“What happened in Duk Padiet on Tuesday was that a man from the Angaac clan came and killed a man from the Riic clan because he believed one of his relatives was killed by that man some time ago,” Chatim said.
He explained that both men were considered members of the local community despite having family ties to different clans through their mothers.
“The one who was killed hails from Gawer, but his mother is from Riic, while the one who killed him is from Lou, but his mother is from Angaac. Both are living in Duk and have become part of the community,” he said.
Chatim said the dispute later escalated into violence, resulting in three deaths on each side and injuries to 21 people.
He said calm has since been restored after security forces intervened. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid further acts of revenge, as authorities work to prevent renewed violence in the area.
The latest clash adds to concerns over recurring communal violence in Jonglei State, where revenge killings and disputes between communities have frequently triggered deadly confrontations.
