Six foreign nationals have been arrested in South Sudan for suspected involvement in drug trafficking.

During their arrest on Monday, the six who were at the Juba International Airport were found in possession of illicit drugs, a Deputy Police Spokesperson told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday.

They were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department officers on Monday.

Deputy Police Spokesperson Maj. Lith Wilson Simon said the arrested men are Kosovo nationals, pointing out that following the arrests, the suspects were taken to police custody at Northern Police Station in Juba.

“According to the law, they are called suspects until it is proven that they are involved in crime. So, a case has been opened under Article 383 of the South Sudan Penal Code, and investigations are underway,” she said.

“Those suspects from Kosovo are in police custody, and the suspected illicit drugs are under investigation by the relevant department. After CID confirms it, they will face the law,” she added.

The police officer said the suspects’ arrest followed an operation which saw CID personnel arrest them at the airport.

The deputy police spokesperson urged the public to inform the police of any suspected criminal activities as a measure to curb crime in the country.

Kosovo is a landlocked country in southeast Europe with partial diplomatic recognition. It borders Serbia to the north and east, North Macedonia to the southeast, Albania the southwest and Montenegro the west.

Although Kosovo is recognized by more than 100 countries, Serbia deems it part of Serbian territory.
