Shortage of malaria medicines in Warrap State

The Warrap State Director General within the State Ministry of Health has announced a shortage of malaria medicines and other drugs in the state.

Director General Aguek Deng Aleer told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday they have run shortages of malaria medicines across the state’s six counties.

He said, “It is rainy season and there are more cases of people suffering from malaria increasing daily, but concerning the medicines of malaria we have some but not enough within the counties. We are expecting them to arrive from Juba not now but soon.”

Aguek said that they had four hospitals within the state with nine medical doctors serving in these hospitals and within six counties they have 24 nurses.

Dr. Aguek said, “We met our partners [i.e. humanitarian organizations] to see on how to prepare in case such cases increase, but two days ago we found one suspected case concerning cholera but until now there is no report, the case was suspected from a young boy who died of diarrhea.”

For his part, the Director of Preventive Medicine in the ministry, Dr. Agai Khorubino Akec, said the ministry has done a full report concerning the 2-year old boy who died of diarrhea on Sunday.

“The ministry and WHO concluded the case does not meet the criteria but this we have not confirmed yet.”

He said another problem was they lack manpower to work within the hospital since they only had nine doctors, which he said was not enough. He called for support to recruit more doctors.
