Shortage of cooking gas hits Khartoum

Citizens in the Sudanese capital Khartoum report a severe shortage of cooking gas.

Citizens in the Sudanese capital Khartoum report a severe shortage of cooking gas.

A citizen at Kalakla area told Radio Tamazuj that the crisis started with an increase in gas canister prices before the commodity disappeared completely from the market.

“Citizens are lining up at the main warehouse of cooking gas in order get a cylinder of cooking gas. Some people spend almost three days without getting anything,” the citizen said.

A cylinder of cooking costs 150 SDG if found. Several citizens grumbled about the scarcity of cooking gas and high prices of charcoal at the market.

The cooking gas shortarge has hit other parts of the country too.

In Atbara town in River Nile state, shops selling cooking gas have been shut down and local authorities have resorted to selling cooking gas in open areas rather than through authorized dealers. Citizens complain that the move is not a real solution.

Meanwhile in Abu Zabad market in West Kordofan, the cost of a jerry can of oil has reached 400 SDG. However, traders there say prices of crops have dropped dramatically as the harvest season has started in the area.
