Shilluk defectors urge warring parties to embrace peace

A group of Shilluk fighters known as the Collo Group for Peace and Reconciliation has left the SPLM-In Opposition rebels and returned to the government side, their spokesperson said.

A group of Shilluk fighters known as the Collo Group for Peace and Reconciliation has left the SPLM-In Opposition rebels and returned to the government side, their spokesperson said.

Collo spokesperson George Amum Okiech told Radio Tamazuj that they reached an agreement with Salva Kiir’s government under which they retuned for dialogue and work for peace.

The former members of the SPLM-IO led by Gwado Ador rebelled to air the grievances of Shilluk tribe in Upper Nile State.

Okiech said land disputes with neighbouring tribes and lack of representation in the national government were the main reasons for their rebellion against the government.

“The Chollo people have the right to be represented in the government because it is their government,” he said.

Okiech commended the Juba government for considering the grievances that had risen. He called on the warring parties to lay down their guns and work for peace in South Sudan.

Okiech claimed that their forces were stationed in northern Upper Nile state. “Our forces stationed mostly in Wadakona and Hamra areas,” he said.
