Activists have shared alarming images showing children suffering from severe malnutrition in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Mukjar in Central Darfur State.
Adam Rajal, the spokesperson of the Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees, on Monday described the humanitarian situation in Darfur as dire. He emphasized that the IDPs have been residing in the camps for 21 years, hoping for a resolution to their predicament but that the ongoing war which erupted on 15 April 2023 only worsened their circumstances.
“Previously, the displaced persons relied on the World Food Programme (WFP) for sustenance. However, since the outbreak of the year-long war, they have not received any food rations,” he disclosed. “This has resulted in a severe food shortage, pushing them to the brink of famine. Children, in particular, have reached a critical stage of malnutrition that could prove fatal.”
Rajal urged for the establishment of secure humanitarian corridors to provide aid to the displaced persons, stressing that any delay could result in loss of lives.
He also urged the relevant humanitarian organizations to accelerate their efforts to rescue millions of vulnerable individuals, including children, women, and the elderly.
Furthermore, the activist reiterated his plea for all parties involved in the conflict to cease delaying and obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid and urged them to prioritize the well-being of the Sudanese people by ending the war.
