Residents and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) from the Umm Doreen locality, South Kordofan, are suffering from the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the area. They complain there is lack of food and medicine, leading many to starve or die.
Ayman Suleiman, a Humanitarian Affairs official in Umm Doreen, explained Radio Tamazuj that the area is witnessing a large increase of IDPs, who come from different parts of South Kordofan. Humanitarian organizations are absent in the region since the beginning of the conflicts in June 2011 and Khartoum forbids the delivery of food and aid to people in the affected areas.
Suleiman said that residents are sharing everything they own with IDPs but are running out of basic goods such as food and medicine. Many children are starving to death and cases of malnutrition are on the rise. He added that the situation will not improve until Khartoum changes its position and appealed to the Sudanese Air Forces to halt the aerial bombings in the area.
Recently, the African Union mediator, Thabo Mbeki, announced that an agreement was reached with the Government of Sudan concerning the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Blue Nile and South Kordofan, calling the agreement a sign of progress.
