Sennar police disperse flour shortage protest

Protests against bread shortages turned violent in Sudan’s Sennar state last week.

Students at primary and high schools in Mazmum town had organized protests over shortages of flour and closure of bakeries after students went to school without breakfast owing to lack of flour at the market on Thursday, an eyewitness told Radio Tamazuj.

The police used tear gas and baton to disperse the protests on streets in Mazmum town. About three protesting ladies were suffocated by tear gas and they were taken to a hospital and one student was arrested, according to the same source.

The arrested student was identified as Sadiq Abdu-Rahman.

The eyewitness pointed out that the protesting students were chanting banners criticizing the governor Ahmed Abass. “The protesters were shouting by saying Ahmed Abbas, you are the one behind the starvation of the people,” he noted.

Citizens also accused security agents of controlling the flour at the market, adding the government is focusing on elections instead of resolving challenges the citizens are facing.
