Senior SPLM member dies in Juba

A senior cadre of the defunct African National Front (ANF), student wing of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) at Sudanese higher learning institutions died at the age of 40 years on Monday in Juba.

Dr. Akot Dut Akol was the first South Sudanese to be president of the Students Union at University of Khartoum from 2004-2005. He hails from the Dinka tribe in Lakes State.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the deceased’s relative said Akot died at Juba Teaching Hospital on Monday morning after undergoing a surgical operation last Wednesday.

He pointed out that Akot was buried yesterday in Gumbo cemetery and that prayers will be organized at Gudele residential area.

Akot Dut had served as an assistant secretary at the SPLM youth and student secretariat before the separation of South Sudan in 2011.

SPLM Secretary-General Pagan Amum was at the forefront of the mourners.
