An SPLA brigadier general was shot dead in Juba on Wednesday night by an unidentified policeman. He was not in uniform when killed.

Army spokesman Colonel Philip Aguer said Brigadier General Kwach Deng Kwach, the commander of Pibor military area of Jonglei state, was shot in unclear circumstances in Juba, and that the killer has been arrested.

A witness told Radio Tamazuj that the brigadier was not in uniform when the incident took place at around 8:00 p.m., at the bakery where Tombura road meets with Custom main road.

He says there was an argument between two policemen and another group of three men, among them the brigadier.

One of the latter group reportedly grabbed a gun from the police then later returned it, whereupon they were immediately asked to sit down. The one who handed the gun back sat down but one of them started running. Police opened fire, killing the brigadier.

Colonel James Monday Enoka explained to Eye Radio, “The late was shot and killed by a policeman who was drunk, this incident took place in a bakery near the University of Juba, and the policeman has been arrested and criminal case has been opened against him in Malakia Police Station. The body of the late brigadier was taken to Juba Teaching Hospital’’

Kwach had also served as a military police commander in Juba and as commissioner of Aweil East County from 2010 to 2012. His body has been sent to Aweil.
