In a bid to address the mobility challenges faced by the government of Western Equatoria, 11 vehicles were purchased using local revenue.
The recipients of these vehicles include esteemed officials such as the Right Honourable Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, two Advisors, five Ministers, the Secretary-General for the State Government, and the State Coordination in Juba.
During the official handover ceremony held on Tuesday, State Governor Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba acknowledged the financial constraints faced by the state and its reliance on limited resources.
He stated, “Upon assuming office during a critical period with minimal funds, we sought to procure 11 vehicles using the modest revenue generated within the state. Although they may not be V8s, we will utilize them to transport individuals to their respective offices. I remain committed to not acquiring V8s while my Ministers commute on foot.”
Governor Futuyo urged the recipients to utilize the vehicles responsibly and ensure they serve the community effectively. He also expressed his intention to provide more vehicles once additional resources become available, encouraging patience among those who did not receive one.
Minister of Gender and Social Welfare Cicilia Anigunde, who received one of the cars, expressed her gratitude to the state leadership for addressing the transportation needs of officials. She shared her personal experience of relying on walking and motorcycle taxis to reach her workplace, emphasizing the strength acquired through overcoming such challenges.
She added, “We find pleasure in learning and persevering through difficulties. Our commitment to our communities, harmony, peace, and love for our people is exemplified by our actions. We pray that those of us who have received vehicles today use them responsibly, and we call upon our fellow brothers and sisters in the community to support us, as they have witnessed our previous circumstances.”
The vehicle handover ceremony took place in the presence of state officials, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, State Speaker, Advisors, Ministers, and other dignitaries. The cars provided to the officials were Japanese Toyota vehicles commonly known as “Haier.” The exact amount of money used for the vehicle purchases has not been disclosed.
