The continuous joint operations and confidence building meetings between South Sudan’s rival factions have improved the security situation in Kajo-Keji County of Yei River State, a local official said.
The county commissioner, Amos Longa Modi told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the situation has remained steadily stable several months after the signing of the revitalized peace agreement in September last year.
“We have held joint meetings with all security operatives, including the SPLA-IO [Sudan People’s Liberation Army – In Opposition]. We have been having joint visits to both sides and discussed the need to maintain stable security and things are moving on well because we are committed to the implementation of the peace agreement as one people,” said Modi.
He said over 10,000 returnees who sought refuges in Uganda have voluntarily returned to their villages following the improved security.
“Over the last few days, there were many people coming to Kajo-Keji on foot, bicycles and motorbikes on a daily basis. We have registered over 10,000 returnees and call on humanitarian partners to provide them with emergency assistance in form of food and non-food items to the returning population,” stressed Modi.
Kajo-Keji is one of the Yei River State counties badly affected by the 2016 conflict that killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.
