Police authorities in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal and the Warrap States have vowed to crack down on border criminals after an upsurge in crimes along the states’ borders.

Police authorities in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal and the Warrap States have vowed to crack down on border criminals after an upsurge in crimes along the states’ borders.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Colonel Abdullah Deng Mou, the police inspector in Warrap’s Gogrial West County said, “We are facing so many crimes such as rape and theft.”

Deng adds, “The rape crimes we are about to address them, even the looting is reduced here in Warrap except in the border between Gogrial West and Aweil South County where criminals carry on their unwanted activities.”

The police inspector in Aweil South County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Brigadier General Garang Mathiang Kuac said they will work together to deal with crimes along the state borders.

“We have an important role to control border crimes. If we hear an incident in a county or payam, we immediately take action by sending a task force which brings reports back to us, and from there we will decide on how to handle the matter whether refer it to state-level or a minor issue that we can address,’’ he added.

Brigadier General George Awath Wol, Northern Bahr el Ghazal’s Aweil Center County police inspector said although there is a shortage of policemen in the region, they will carry out their mandate of protecting citizens and their property.

“We as the police, are friends to the citizens so we protect their property and this needs a lot of things to ensure that the citizens are secured in their dwellings,” he said. “But due to the shortage of the police in the country, that why you see many issues are arising from here and there.”
