Security forces have been deployed in Rumbek North County of Lakes State to quell inter-communal violence that left at least five people wounded last week, local officials said.

Fighting reportedly broke out between two neighbouring communities of Pakam in Rumbek North and Luacjang of Warrap State at Payal Cattle Camp that displacing several people in the area.

The two communities are said to have been in a wrangle over ownership of the Payal cattle camp.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the Minister of Information in Lakes State, William Koji Kerjok, confirmed that security forces had been deployed to stop further revenge attacks by the two communities.

He said no death cases have been reported, adding that those injured are receiving treatment at the state hospital. “Since it is a season of cultivation, these security forces will be there to maintain security until there is peace between the two communities,” Kerjok said.

For his part, the Minister of Information in Warrap State, Ring Deng Adiing also confirmed the clashes. “When they reached that place the armed youth from Rumbek North county attacked that cattle camp because they said this is their area,” Adiing narrated.

Rival communities in the two states have been experiencing disputes over grazing land, cattle-raiding, and revenge killings.
