The Sudanese Civil Political Feminist Initiative reported the arrest of activist Nada Hashim by security forces in El-Gedaref state on Sunday.
In a statement to Radio Tamazuj, the group confirmed that military intelligence detained Nada Hashim and took her to an undisclosed location early Sunday morning, without informing her family.
The Imitative says they holds military intelligence responsible for Hashim’s safety and demands her immediate release.
Sawsan Abdel Rahman Al-Shiwaia, a civil society activist, speaking to Radio Tamazuj, stated that Nada Hashim was on her way to participate in the founding conference of the Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces, a Sudanese umbrella group also known as Taqaddum, in Addis Ababa.
She emphasized that Hashim’s arrest was due to her involvement in the conference, asserting that Sudanese citizens have an inalienable right to participate in such events.
The Sudanese Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces is a coalition of civil society, youth, vocational and feminist groups working towards bolstering democracy and human rights in Sudan. The body is led by former prime minister Abdalla Hamdok.
The coalition has been active in recent months to help end the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). It has held several meetings in neighbouring countries to tackle the conflict.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began on April 15, 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of Sudanese within and outside the country. Several local, regional, and international initiatives have failed to mediate an end to the war between the two parties.
