A former state parliament speaker was on Wednesday arrested by national security agents in the town of Rumbek in Western Lakes state, his relatives said.

Former Western Lakes speaker Marik Nanga Marik was arrested by security forces at the Rumbek airstrip, a relative told Radio Tamazuj.

“Marik came to Rumbek from Juba together with other Western Lakes politicians ahead of President Kiir’s visit. But when they arrived, Marik was immediately arrested at the airstrip,” he explained.

The former legislator, according to his relatives, is currently held at the national security custody in Makoi area. They claimed that the politician was arrested on the orders of Governor John Deng Mamer.

On his part, Western Lakes’ information minister Isaac Majak confirmed the former lawmaker had been detained in the state.

Majak, who is also the state government spokesman, said:” Marik was arrested for administrative issues. The issue will be solved administratively,” he said.

However, the official did not give clear reasons for what prompted the former state legislator’s arrest.

The former MP has on several occasions been arrested in greater Lakes region.
