Sudanese security agents have dispersed a protests organized in solidarity with the October Um Dom incident which left five people dead in Khartoum.
On 14 October Sudanese authorities forcibly evicted families from Um Dom, resulting in five people including a child drowning.
Activist Amel Habbani, who participated in the latest protest, told Radio Tamazuj that the demonstrators were demanding abolition of the Sudanese Public Order Law, summoning of the police Director General, and investigations into the Um Dom incident.
“What happened is that many security forces came before the protests, they called me and told me that we don’t want anybody to stand here, they said this is an unlawful protest, and they threatened us,” she said.
Amel said the security agents arrested two protesters from the Sudanese Republican Party and tore up banners. “They started to regroup themselves and arrested two youths from the Republican Party and they also took the posters that we were holding,” she said.
“After that they ordered us to leave the area, they said it was an unlawful protest, and they don’t allow any gathering,” she added.
Amel pointed out that the activists managed to hand over a petition to the European Union and the Constitutional Court.
