Members of the “Sudan Appeal” opposition parties arrested by security agents in El Obeid town in North Kordofan State last Saturday have been released, a member of the opposition said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, the opposition alliance’s spokesman in El Obeid El Sadiq El Mamun said the detainees were released Sunday, after one day in detention.
Mamun, who was also detained along with the opposition members, said they will still boycott the April elections.
He pointed out that there is no sign of campaigning for elections in the town. He said there are no rallies by candidates of the ruling National Congress Party so far.
Last week, the police reportedly cordoned off the NUP headquarters in El Obeid and arrested the Secretary-General of the National Umma Party Sarah Nugud Allah and a leading figure of the Unionist Movement Mohamed Abdel Rahim Shadad, along with 34 others.
The opposition members were organizing an anti-election rally under the “Sudan Appeal” declaration.
