Security agents in El Obeid town in Sudan’s North Kordofan State have disrupted an anti-election rally organized by the “Sudan Appeal” opposition parties on Saturday, arresting dozens.
The Secretary-General of the National Umma Party Sarah Nugud Allah and a leading figure of the Unionist Movement Mohamed Abdel Rahim Shadad were reportedly arrested, along with 34 others.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, the opposition alliance’s spokesman Bakri Yusuf confirmed that the police had cordoned off the NUP headquarters in El Obeid since Saturday morning. Supporters of the opposition group were prevented from entering and the police dispersed the crown by using tear gas and firing in the air.
Yusuf further said about two opposition figures who had been invited from Khartoum to address the rally were detained.
“Actually, we do not have the total number of the political leaders who have been arrested, but according to the information we have obtained, the number could reach 36 arrested politicians who are cadres and prominent leaders of the Sudan Appeal,” he said.
