Sudanese security agents in Kassala State on Saturday arrested and detained a young man from their house in Kassala city.
Omar Al-Fatih, 22 years old, was picked up from their house by security officers who took him to an unknown destination, eyewitnesses said, raising suspicion over the motive of the arrest.
An eyewitness told Radio Tamazuj that a group of five masked individuals arrived at the residence of Omar in Kassala city and arrested him before disappearing with him.
The eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: “The detainee has no affiliation with any of the warring parties in Sudan, neither the Sudanese Army nor the Rapid Support Forces.”
The source stated, “Omar’s roots trace back to Wad Madani city, Riyadh neighbourhood in Hantoub. He was one of the active youth in the December revolution.”
The source also revealed that Omar had previously been arrested, along with seven other youths, about a week ago on one of the travel buses on his way to Wad Madani city to receive a sum of money.
According to the source, the youths were detained in a building belonging to the security apparatus in Al-Gadarif State, where they were subjected to torture and stripped of their clothes “in a humiliating manner” before being released the next day after the security apparatus found no evidence against them.
The source further explained that Omar was planning to complete his studies, which had recently been interrupted. He was seeking to obtain a passport and continue his studies in one of the countries where education is available.
The source expressed concern that the arrest may have been based on racial grounds.
Security agents have been active in a series of arrests in various states of Sudan. Last week, security agents carried out a series of arrests in Singa City, Sinnar state, targeting civil activists, lawyers, and political activists.
