Leader of the opposition Sudanese Congress Party Ibrahim al-Sheikh has called on the opposition parties to unite their ranks and develop a clear plan to topple the ruling National Congress Party led by Omar al Bashir.
Al-Sheikh’s statement comes after the opposition alliance refused to engage in a National Dialogue called for by the ruling party. The group has instead reiterated its position to spearhead a popular uprising.
On a weekly programme broadcast by Radio Tamazuj on Friday, the opposition leader said the current African Union mediation will never be able to reconcile the viewpoints of the warring parties.
The politician pointed out that the crisis in Sudan needs a new mediation other than the African Union mechanism. He stressed that the only way out of the current crisis is to unite the ranks of the opposition and rally new groups such as youth organizations and conflict-displaced people to plan on how to overthrow the NCP-led government.
Last year Ibrahim al-Sheikh was detained for more than three months after he criticized the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for alleged human rights abuses.
