Schools remain closed over insecurity in Mundri East

The schools in Mundri East County in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State are not functioning owing to security fears in the area, a local official said.

John Henry, Mudri East County Commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that primary and secondary schools were closed due to insecurity following fighting between government forces and opposition fighters last month.

Henry further said the armed opposition forces led by Machar had attacked the area for four days in July. He pointed out the attackers managed to capture the county headquarters, but they were repulsed.

The local official revealed that their schools are still closed due to security fears, saying parents also refuse to send their children to schools over security concerns.

The commissioner accused the opposition forces of harassing teachers and students. However, Henry said they decided to reopen the schools by next week.
