The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has provided the Darfur and Blue Nile regions with 53 tons of wheat in a bid to assist the needy local communities.

The Minister of Information in the Darfur Regional Government, Dr. Mustafa Al-Jamil, confirmed in a statement to Radio Tamazuj Friday that his government received the Saudi grant amounting to 53 thousand tons of wheat.

“The Saudi Ambassador Jaafar bin Hassan vowed to provide additional aid over five hundred trucks, including shelter materials and medical equipment,” he said.

The grant was delivered to Port Sudan in the presence of the Saudi Ambassador, along with the Federal Minister of Information, the Commissioner-General for Humanitarian Aid, and members of the Darfur Regional Government.

On a related note, Minister Al Jamil said that the regional government received medical equipment and shelter materials from the Darfur diaspora.

He appreciated the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its “growing humanitarian role in providing aid, in addition to their role in the Jeddah negotiations to establish peace in Sudan.”

It is expected that the wheat will be transferred to Darfur and the Blue Nile within the coming days accompanied by a convoy of joint forces consisting of the armed movements that signed the Juba Peace Agreement.

The Darfur region has been suffering from massive population displacements since 2003.

The current war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has also sparked displacements and exacerbated the humanitarian situation in the region.
